If you have an interest in learning how to become a paralegal, it is first important to define exactly what is a paralegal. A paralegal is a person who works under the supervision of a licensed attorney and does much the same tasks that a licensed lawyer can perform.

This road may be long and is certainly not guaranteed, but has worked successfully for several paralegals. If you are not safe to enter the paralegal profession, then spent some time in a law firm, even in another capacity, you will first work experience in the legal field and can help you to decide whether you should pursue the career.

Although it is possible to work your way up another position, many lawyers prefer that you get paralegal studies, so that your employer may decide to pay for your training program. Other would-be paralegals have taken the initiative and chose to attend school while working, or for promotion within their organization or to find a paralegal position elsewhere.

Another way to become a paralegal is a graduate of a paralegal training program and obtain a paralegal position at the entry level. There are many types of paralegal training programs available, which vary in length and price. There are community colleges or junior vocational schools, universities in four years, and even programs that offer online paralegal or legal studies option.

The type of program you choose will depend on how long you have to devote to study and level of education you want to achieve. For example, if you want to earn an associate degree with a paralegal certificate, then you might consider a college. Earn your associate degree often takes more than just earning your certificate, because you will need to take general education courses outside your field of legal studies. If you just want to get a paralegal certificate, then a vocational school or online may be your best choice.

Although you can meet other paralegals who entered the profession in different ways, the two methods described above are the most common ways to become a paralegal.
