Careers with Respiratory Therapy Degree

Respiratory Therapists (RT) are also known as Respiratory Care Practitioners. They evaluate, treat and provide care to patients with respiratory problems or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Their work is practicing under supervision or direction of physicians. They also work closely and frequently monitor respiratory therapy technicians.
What does one do RT?
The American Association for Respiratory Care describes one day in the life of a respiratory therapist including activities such as:
1. Diagnosis of pulmonary and respiratory disorders.
2. Recommending treatments for respiratory diseases.
3. Conducting studies in patients chest.
4. The analysis of breath, tissue and blood samples of patients.
5. Managing ventilators and artificial airway devices for patients.
6. Educating patients and their families about lung diseases.
Respiratory Therapists provide care to patients ranging from premature infants with underdeveloped lungs to the elderly suffering from lung diseases. They also respond to emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes or shock.
How do I become a RT?
The minimum qualification for a respiratory therapist is an associate degree respiratory therapy. While an associate degree in respiratory therapy may be sufficient to get started, RTS must earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in respiratory therapy career.
In addition to the degree, all U.S. states except Alaska and Hawaii require RTS to a valid license from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). The Board grants the Certified respiratory therapist (CRT) credential evaluation to students who graduate from entry-level or advanced respiratory therapy program and pass a licensure exam.
CRTs that full advanced respiratory therapy programs and two separate exams are eligible for a Registered respiratory therapist (RRT) certificate of NBRC. It should, before students enroll in a respiratory therapy program that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body of the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or recognition of the Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
What will I learn?
As part of their training, students of a respiratory therapy degree to learn subjects such as cardiac & kidney anatomy & physiology, cardiopulmonary pharmacology, anatomy and physiology of the lungs, pulmonary function tests, respiratory care protocols, polysomnography, and much more.
Besides these clinical concepts, respiratory therapy graduates also teach management principles to the respiratory care supervisory tasks. These themes include the management of planning, psychology of motivation, business law, organizational design and change, etc.
At the end of their program, graduates have the skills and knowledge to the daily challenges the work of an RT throws – meet them in a hospital treating patients with chronic respiratory problems or responding to emergency situations or when a patient’s home with in preventive care.
